Floor marking: how to choose the right one
Warehouse floor marking has to last under real traffic: pedestrians, pallet trucks, forklifts turning on the spot. Answer three questions – what to mark, what traffic passes, on which floor – and find the right ORGATEX LongLife line, the colours to use and how to apply it.
Find the right line in 3 questions
Choose one answer for each question: the recommendation appears right below, with the suitable products.
1What do you need to mark?
2What traffic passes over it?
Choose the heaviest vehicle or the toughest manoeuvre.
3Floor and environment?
Three questions to choose
1. What you need to mark
The format depends on the use: tape on a roll for aisles and borders, corners and T and L pieces for locations, symbols for directions and walkways, protective windows for documents and codes on the floor, adhesive signs for prohibitions and hazards.
2. What traffic passes
What counts is the heaviest vehicle and the toughest manoeuvre. Pedestrians and pallet trucks: Low Duty or Standard. Forklifts: Standard, or Eco, Grip, Rough Ground, Cold Performance or Outdoor depending on floor and environment. Heavy forklifts: Heavy Duty. Forklifts turning on the spot: Vector™.
3. Floor and environment
On smooth floors the traffic-based choice applies. Rough floor: Rough Ground. Cold store: Cold Performance, applied down to -20 °C. EPA: ESD tape. Recycled material: Eco. Anti-slip needed as well: Grip. Outdoors: Outdoor.
Solutions by use
Aisles with forklifts
On smooth floors LongLife Standard withstands regular forklift traffic: 0.48 mm, 50 m rolls in a cardboard dispenser. 45° and 90° corners for bends and crossings, segmented strips on a roll for dashed lines.
Recommended line: LongLife (Standard)
Manoeuvring areas and crossings
Where forklifts turn on the spot, ordinary markings fray or lift. Vector™, 0.2 mm polyester, is designed to withstand turning; T, L and square pieces and rounded Vector™ symbols are also available.
Recommended line: Vector™
Heavy forklifts and heavy loads
Heavy Duty, 1.3 mm with a milled edge, is the only line for heavy forklift traffic. T and L pieces and strips, also rounded, to outline locations; for block storage there are LongLife Modul elements in break-resistant plastic, adhesive or fixed with anchors. For floor documents there is the aluminium Klarsicht Heavy Duty window.
Cold stores
Cold Performance can be applied down to -20 °C: tape, symbols and protective windows for aisles, locations and escape routes in cold stores and freezer areas.
Rough or uneven floors
Rough Ground, 1.1 mm reinforced polyurethane with a very high adhesion adhesive, is made for raw concrete, paving blocks and anti-slip coatings. The pressure roller improves adhesion on textured surfaces; for prohibitions and hazards there are the Rough Ground Ø 600 mm signs, for locations the Modul L corners fixed with anchors.
Recommended line: Rough Ground
Outdoor areas
Outdoor, 2.8 mm polyurethane with a very high adhesion adhesive, is made for asphalt and concrete: yards, loading zones, walkways and ramp edges. Reflective surface, anti-slip even when wet; always applied with LongLife Primer. For locations there are Modul L corners fixed with anchors.
Recommended line: Outdoor
ESD areas
The yellow tape printed «ESD Protected Area» marks EPAs in a recognisable way and withstands pedestrians, pallet trucks and forklifts. If the marking itself must provide ESD protection, there is the vinyl + PET ESD tape, protected on adhesive and surface, in 7 colours.
Recommended line: ESD
Offices, walkways and temporary markings
Low Duty (0.16 mm) is the economical solution for temporary markings and areas with pedestrians and pallet trucks. For permanent walkways use LongLife Standard with footprint and arrow symbols; the fabric tape is for provisional marking, outdoors too.
Recommended line: Low Duty
Pallet locations and floor documents
The marking kit contains L corners, straight pieces and A4 windows for 10 pallet locations; alternatively, single corners, T and L pieces. Protective windows hold sheets, barcodes and QR codes on the floor: the special surface avoids glare from ceiling lights and keeps them scanner-readable. Dirt-repellent version for the dirtiest areas.
Safety: anti-slip, stairs and escape routes
Anti-slip tapes up to R13, stair nosings, class C photoluminescent tapes for escape routes, zebra crossings and floor signs.

Which colours to use
For traffic routes and danger points Italian Legislative Decree 81/08 gives specific rules; beyond that, colour coding is an internal choice, usually linked to 5S. The recommended format is an ORGATEX indication.
| What to mark | Colour | Recommended format | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle traffic routes (forklift aisles) Regulation | Continuous lines in a clearly visible colour, preferably white or yellow depending on the floor | Tape | Italian Legislative Decree 81/08, Annex XXVIII, point 2.1 (where the use of the premises requires it) |
| Obstacles and danger points (impacts, falling objects or people) Regulation | Yellow/black or red/white bands angled at about 45°, sized to the obstacle | Two-colour tape | Italian Legislative Decree 81/08, Annex XXVIII, points 1.1–1.3 |
| Safety signs on the floor Regulation | Red prohibition, yellow warning, blue mandatory action, green escape and first aid | Adhesive signs | Italian Legislative Decree 81/08, Annex XXIV (safety colours) |
| Fire-fighting equipment (area to keep clear) Practice | Red or red/white | Tape or corners | Common practice: red is the safety colour for fire-fighting equipment (Annex XXIV) |
| Walkways Practice | A colour different from the forklift aisles, with footprint and arrow symbols; white or yellow zebra stripes at crossings | Tape, symbols, zebra stripes | Industry practice, not mandatory |
| Incoming raw materials and semi-finished goods Practice | Blue (example) | Corners and pre-cut pieces | 5S practice, not mandatory |
| Finished goods and dispatch areas Practice | Green (example) | Corners and pre-cut pieces | 5S practice, not mandatory |
| Scrap, non-conforming and blocked material Practice | Red (example) | Pre-cut pieces or tape | 5S practice, not mandatory |
| Quality control and material on hold Practice | Orange (example) | Pre-cut pieces or tape | 5S practice, not mandatory |
| Equipment and stations (trolleys, containers, bins) Practice | White (example) | Corners or pre-cut pieces | 5S practice, not mandatory |
| Escape routes and emergency exits Practice | Photoluminescent tapes and symbols, alongside green escape signs | Photoluminescent tapes and symbols | Escape green: Annex XXIV. Class C to DIN 67510: ORGATEX data |
The «practice» rows are examples of internal coding, not legal obligations: choose a scheme, document it in your 5S standard or layout and use it across the whole plant. For the specific obligations of your site refer to your risk assessment.
How to apply it
Correct application matters as much as choosing the line. The steps indicated by ORGATEX:
1. Remove old markings
Lift old tape with the LongLife scraper (1200 mm, used standing up) and dissolve adhesive residue with LongLife Remover.
2. Clean and degrease
The floor must be even and free of dust, oil and grease: clean thoroughly, then degrease the application strip with LongLife Cleaner.
3. Primer where needed
On critical surfaces, such as porous or dusty concrete, LongLife Primer increases adhesion. Outdoors, and therefore always with LongLife Outdoor, it is mandatory.
4. Respect the application temperature
Each line has its own minimum application temperature: see the table. Cold Performance can be applied in cold stores down to -20 °C.
5. Unroll and cut
Unroll the tape straight from the dispenser, without chalk lines, and do not overlap markings. For corners and joints use the stainless steel cutting template: 90° and 45° cuts on 50, 75 and 100 mm.
6. Press with the roller
The 75 mm rubber pressure roller spreads pressure evenly, prevents air bubbles and improves adhesion on textured floors.
7. Let it bond
ORGATEX indicates about 12 hours for the adhesive to bond fully.
8. Seal the edges where needed
LongLife edge sealing prevents moisture penetration, for example outdoors: 140 ml covers about 10–15 m.
Application temperature by line
| LongLife (Standard) | 18–25 °C |
| Eco | 18–25 °C |
| Heavy Duty | 18–25 °C |
| Low Duty | ≥ 12 °C |
| Vector™ | ≥ 12 °C |
| Outdoor | ≥ 12 °C |
| Rough Ground | ≥ 20 °C |
| Grip | ≥ 20 °C |
| Cold Performance | down to -20 °C |
To remove markings: LongLife scraper for the tape, LongLife Remover for adhesive residue; on delicate floors test in a hidden spot first.
Floor safety
Besides aisle marking, the range includes products for slips, stairs, escape routes and pedestrian crossings.
Anti-slip tapes
UniversalGrip (R13, many colours) for stairs, ramps and walkways; ProGrip (R13, coarse grit) for busy, dirty areas; FlexGrip (R13) for uneven surfaces and checker plate; NanoGrip (R10, non-abrasive, easy to clean) for hygiene, food and cleanroom areas.
Anti-slip marking
LongLife Grip is a marking tape with an anti-slip, retroreflective surface: it marks and secures walkways with a single product.
Stair nosings
Three R13 versions in 600, 800 and 1000 mm: Slim in aluminium composite for indoor use, glued or screwed; Universal in 2.6 mm aluminium for indoor and outdoor use, screwed; Heavy Duty in 3.8 mm glass-fibre reinforced plastic with aluminium oxide grit, for indoor and outdoor use, screwed or glued.
Photoluminescent escape routes
Tapes, tapes with an integrated luminous strip and symbols (arrows, dots, stair corners) with 200/25 mcd/m² luminance to DIN 67510, class C (ORGATEX data), for indoor use: they show the way to the exits even in the dark.
Zebra crossings
Adhesive stripes 200 × 1200 or 300 × 1500 mm, white or yellow: 5 stripes make a complete crossing. For smooth, gap-free indoor floors.
Floor signs
Adhesive PVC signs Ø 600 mm and 900 mm half circles with prohibition, warning and mandatory symbols; forklifts can drive over them. For rough or textured floors the Ø 600 mm signs also come in a Rough Ground version.
Tape or paint?
The advantages of LongLife tape over floor paint:
No drying time
The tape is applied and the area is used straight away, with no downtime for drying; the adhesive bonds fully in about 12 hours.
Easy application
It unrolls from the cardboard dispenser, without chalk lines or special equipment.
Changeable layout
When the layout changes, it is removed without residue using LongLife Remover and the scraper.
Consistent colours
Standard colours that stay the same over time, including repeat orders.
Durability depends on the line: choose it by traffic and floor.
Frequently asked questions
Which colours should be used for floor marking? Are any colours mandatory?
In Italy, Legislative Decree 81/08 (Annex XXVIII) requires that, where the use of the premises makes it necessary, vehicle traffic routes are marked with continuous lines in a clearly visible colour, preferably white or yellow depending on the floor, and that obstacles and danger points are marked with yellow/black or red/white bands angled at about 45°. Signs follow Annex XXIV: red for prohibitions, yellow for warnings, blue for mandatory actions, green for escape and first aid. Other colours (for example blue for raw materials, green for finished goods, red for scrap) are not set by law: they are an internal code to define and apply consistently.
What is the difference between the LongLife lines? Which one for forklifts?
Thickness, material and adhesive differ, and so does the traffic they withstand. Low Duty (0.16 mm) is for pedestrians and pallet trucks and for temporary markings. Standard, Eco, Grip, Rough Ground, Cold Performance and the LongLife ESD tape («ESD Protected Area») also withstand forklifts: choose by floor (smooth, rough, cold store, EPA) and requirements (recycled material, slip resistance). Heavy Duty (1.3 mm) is the only line for heavy forklifts, Vector™ the only one that resists forklifts turning on the spot. Outdoor (2.8 mm) is for outdoor use, up to forklifts. The fabric tape is for temporary marking. For the vinyl + PET ESD tape, with ESD protection on adhesive and surface, ORGATEX does not state the permitted traffic.
How is the tape applied and at what temperature?
Clean and degrease the floor, unroll the tape straight from the dispenser and press it down with the pressure roller, without overlapping markings. Application temperature: Standard, Eco and Heavy Duty between 18 and 25 °C; Low Duty, Vector™ and Outdoor at least 12 °C (Outdoor always with LongLife Primer); Rough Ground and Grip at least 20 °C; Cold Performance even down to -20 °C. After application ORGATEX indicates about 12 hours for the adhesive to bond fully.
How should the floor be prepared before application?
The floor must be even, clean and free of dust, oil and grease. First clean thoroughly, then degrease the application strip with LongLife Cleaner. Remove old markings with the scraper and adhesive residue with LongLife Remover. On critical surfaces, such as porous or dusty concrete, LongLife Primer increases adhesion; outdoors it is always required.
Can LongLife markings be removed without leaving residue?
Yes. According to ORGATEX, LongLife markings can be removed without residue using LongLife Remover. Markings are lifted with the LongLife scraper, 1200 mm long so you can work standing up, with a 125 mm blade and 3 spare blades; adhesive residue is dissolved with the Remover. On delicate floors test it in a hidden spot first.
Is adhesive tape or paint better for floor marking?
Adhesive marking has no drying time: tapes and symbols are applied without chalk lines or special equipment and the area can be used straight away (the adhesive bonds fully in about 12 hours). When the layout changes it is removed without residue with LongLife Remover, and colours stay standard and consistent in repeat orders. Choose the line by traffic and floor: if in doubt, we will recommend it.
Can floor markings be cleaned with a scrubber dryer?
Yes: LongLife tapes and symbols are stated to be resistant to abrasion and washing; for the symbols machine washing is explicitly declared too. After application it is best to wait the roughly 12 hours the adhesive needs to bond before the first machine wash.
Are special sizes, colours or shapes available?
Yes, on request. ORGATEX makes LongLife Individuell tape in 50, 75 or 100 mm with custom colours, symbols or QR codes, and custom shapes in any form, size, colour and material: also with anti-slip surfaces, adhesives for rough floors or photoluminescent materials. Send us the drawing and quantities: we will prepare a quote with delivery times.
Can you help me choose floor marking and safety products? Do you carry out site visits?
Yes. Send us a floor plan or a few photos of the areas to be marked or made safe and tell us how they are used (traffic, vehicles, floor, stairs, exits): we will recommend the right products, with colours, formats and quantities. For larger sites or special situations we can consider a site visit on request.
Which floors can LongLife marking be applied to?
Standard, Eco, Vector™ and Heavy Duty are for smooth indoor industrial floors: concrete and epoxy resin, Standard and Eco also stone and metal. Cold Performance is for concrete, screed and metal. Rough Ground is made for rough or textured floors: raw concrete, paving blocks, anti-slip MMA coatings, tiles. Grip suits smooth and textured floors, Low Duty screeds, MMA coatings and smooth tiles. The fabric tape adheres to clean surfaces such as metal, plastic or coated surfaces. Outdoors, Outdoor goes on asphalt, concrete and paved surfaces, also rough or uneven; LongLife Modul L corners are fixed with anchors on concrete, asphalt or paving blocks, even uneven or oily ones.
Can LongLife marking be used outdoors?
Yes, with the right products. For aisles, loading areas and walkways on asphalt or concrete there is LongLife Outdoor (codes LGOD50, LGOD75 and LGOD100, white -02 or yellow -04): 2.8 mm polyurethane, reflective and anti-slip even when wet, for pedestrians, pallet trucks and forklifts. For outdoor locations there are LongLife Modul L corners (LGMOD-L), fixed with anchors. Low Duty also suits sheltered outdoor areas and the fabric tape temporary marking; the other lines are for indoor use. Outdoors LongLife Primer is always required and edge sealing protects against moisture.
How are corners and crossings made?
You can use pre-cut pieces – 45° and 90° corners (Standard), T and L pieces (Standard, Vector™, Heavy Duty, Cold Performance), crosses (Standard and Vector™ Rounded) – or cut the tape with the stainless steel LongLife cutting template, which guides 90° and 45° cuts on 50, 75 and 100 mm widths. For 10 pallet locations there is the marking kit (L corners, straight pieces and A4 windows); on uneven floors or outdoors, LongLife Modul L corners fixed with anchors. ORGATEX recommends not overlapping markings.
Would you like a proposal for your plant?
Send us a floor plan or photos of aisles and floor, the traffic and the temperatures: we will recommend line, colours, formats and application accessories, with quantities.
