Aluminium strut profile 45x90 – profile with slot 10 for crossbars and support frames
The 45x90 is like two 45x45 in a single profile: six 10 mm slots, central bores that can be threaded and the heavy slot of the 45 series. Mounted upright it has Ix = 124.6 cm⁴, nine times the 45x45: it is the profile for long or loaded crossbars, bases, machine frames and heavy trolleys. Order it as a 6070 mm bar or cut to length.
Why choose it
Stiff when upright
Mounted upright it deflects almost four times less than flat: long crossbars without intermediate supports.
Heavy slot
Slot geometry for high-strength connections, even under dynamic loads.
Machinable central bores
Can be threaded M12 or M16 for feet, central bolts and end connections.
Bar or cut to size
6070 mm bar of usable length or pieces cut to your dimensions, from 50 mm upwards.
Choose it if…
- You have long or loaded crossbars and want to avoid intermediate supports.
- You build bases, machine frames or heavy trolleys.
- You want two rows of slots on the same side to fix guides or panels.
- You work in the 45 series and want the same accessories as the 45x45.
Choose another solution if…
- Loads are medium and you want less weight, 3.0 kg/m: Aluminium strut profile 45x90L →
- Spans are even longer: the 45x180 has Ix 766.7 cm⁴: Aluminium strut profile 45x180 →
- You need a post that is stiff in both directions: Aluminium strut profile 90x90L →

How to use it in the structure
Three practical tips for the 45x90:
Orientation
Upright Ix 124.6 cm⁴, flat Iy 32.8 cm⁴: the same crossbar deflects almost four times less if you mount it upright.
Span and deflection
Over 1000 mm, supports at the ends and 500 N at the centre: about 0.12 mm upright and 0.45 mm flat.
Machining
M12 or M16 in all central bores and D17 holes for connectors; the machined profile goes up to 6000 mm.
For loads in several directions or very heavily loaded posts consider the 90x90L.

When the 45x45 deflects too much but the 45x90 is larger than necessary: the 45x60 has Ix 37.2 cm⁴ and weighs 3.0 kg/m, compared with 13.8 and 2.0 for the 45x45 and 124.6 and 4.2 for the 45x90.
It depends on where the load comes from. Upright, with the 90 mm side vertical, it has Ix 124.6 cm⁴; flat Iy 32.8 cm⁴. For a crossbar loaded from above mount it upright: it deflects almost four times less.
The 45x90L weighs 3.0 kg/m and has Ix 82.0 / Iy 23.6 cm⁴; the solid 45x90 weighs 4.2 kg/m, has 124.6 / 32.8 cm⁴ and the heavy slot. Same cover cap and same brackets: for normal loads the 45x90L is enough.
The 50x100L has Ix 162.8 cm⁴ at 4.6 kg/m; the solid 45x90 has 124.6 cm⁴ at 4.2 kg/m. The choice is driven mainly by the series: stay in the same grid dimension as the rest of the structure.
The 45x90 weighs 4.2 kg/m, has Ix 124.6 and Iy 32.8 cm⁴ and heavy-geometry slots. The 45x90L weighs 3.0 kg/m and has 82.0 and 23.6 cm⁴. They have the same dimensions and use the same cover cap and the same 45x90 brackets.
An example: 1000 mm span, supports at the ends and 500 N at the centre. Upright the theoretical deflection is about 0.12 mm, flat about 0.45 mm (E = 70 000 N/mm²). Joints and constraints change the result: we carry out the verification on the drawing.
Yes, M12 or M16 in all central bores, as standard machining with its own code. Minimum lengths: 60 mm with M12 on one end and 110 mm on both; 120 mm with M16 on one end and 240 mm on both.
The zinc-plated steel foot in the 45x90 version for 10 mm slot, or an levelling foot screwed into the threaded central bore.
The screw alone on profiles with slot C10 and an M12-threaded central hole. The plate version on the 40x80, 45x90, 80x80 and 90x90 sections.
It is the width of the profile slot and determines which accessories you use. Slot C6 (6 mm) is for 20 series profiles, C8 (8 mm) for the 30 series, C10 (10 mm) for profiles from the 40 series upwards. Nuts, screws, brackets and cover caps are chosen by slot: each accessory's product page shows the right one.
Yes. You can order the full bar or the piece cut to the length you need: we do the cutting ourselves, in our workshop. Each profile's product page shows the maximum bar length and the minimum cut length.
Look at the moments of inertia Ix and Iy: the higher they are, the less the profile deflects under load. For the same section, “L” profiles are lightened and deflect a little more. For long spans or high loads move to a larger section or a tall profile (e.g. 45x90 instead of 45x45). If you send us drawing and loads, we will check the choice.
The T-nut is inserted from the front into the slot, even in an assembled structure, and positions itself when you tighten the screw: it is the standard choice for fixing accessories. The sliding block withstands higher forces, but normally has to be inserted from the profile end before closing the frame; spring versions stay where you put them.
The simplest way is the bracket, which joins two profiles at 90° with screws and nuts in the slot, without machining. For end, T, 45° or three-way connections there are dedicated connectors, some of which require profile machining as stated on their product page.
Yes, for several accessories (for example cover caps, hinges and nuts) there are conductive ESD versions, indicated in the name or variant. Tell us which EPA area you work in and we will confirm the components to use.
On each product page you will find the MGE catalogue pages to download as PDF, with dimensioned drawings and technical data; the Specifications tab shows the data for the variant you have chosen.
Yes. Send us the parts list or a sketch with dimensions: we give you codes, quantities and cut lengths and prepare the kit with profiles already cut and the accessories.
