Lean Logistic: material arrives at the line on wheels

Dollies for KLT containers and pallets, shelf carts, the LiftLiner® logistics train for the milk run, FIFO floor lanes and Park Stations: less manual transport, fewer forklifts in the department, a tidy line side. KLT containers, open-front bins, plastic pallets and lids complete the flow, from the supplier to the line.

Why lean internal logistics

Less manual transport

Containers travel on wheels from the warehouse to the line, without lifting them; with the milk run one round replaces many single forklift trips.

Tidy line side

Every cart has its place, marked on the floor: no carts scattered in the aisles, the right material at the right height.

FIFO

The first cart in is the first out: material does not age at the back of the row and the operator always knows which one to take.

The flow in 4 steps

From the supplier to the workstation, material passes through four steps. You choose in this order, starting from the load unit.

1 · The container

1 · The container

R-KLT and RL-KLT according to VDA 4500, open-front bins, plastic pallets and lids: the load unit decides everything else.

2 · The dolly or cart

2 · The dolly or cart

The KLT stack or the pallet goes on wheels and is never lifted again: dollies for KLT, pallet dollies, shelf carts.

3 · The train

3 · The train

The milk run brings the materials of several workstations in one round: a convoy of dollies, Taxi Liner or LiftLiner® behind a tractor.

4 · The line side

4 · The line side

FIFO lanes and Park Stations: every cart has its place and the first in is the first out.

Convoy, Taxi Liner or LiftLiner®

In the milk run the train makes a round at regular intervals, like the milkman: it delivers materials to the points of use, collects empty containers and kanban cards and returns to the warehouse. Compared with single forklift trips you reduce traffic, waiting and line-side stock.

  • Convoy: dollies and pallet dollies coupled with the drawbar, uncoupled from the last one; with the Milk Run Drawbar Assembly you connect them to the tractor. Up to 7–8 Dolly VII B and 1000 kg, 6 Dolly Pallets and 4000 kg, at 6 km/h.
  • Taxi Liner: 3-bay trailer for 600×400 dollies, loading and unloading from both sides: take the dolly you need without uncoupling the others. 750 kg per trailer.
  • LiftLiner®: lifts the LL carts in less than 3 s, 1000 kg per bay and up to 8 carts per train, and at unloading tilts them towards the operator. U-turn in 4.5 m with 3 LiftLiners: no forklifts in the department.

Load capacities and speeds are maximum values: we check route, bends, gradients and floors with you. Dimensions and formats of containers, pallets and lids are given on their product pages.

Good to know before you choose

Start from the load unit

  • KLT 600×400 or 600×500: Dolly Type I, II, VII B or VII C.
  • 800×600 stacks, two 600×400 stacks or 800×600 pallets: 800×600 Dolly or Mini Dolly Pallet.
  • Euro pallets and 1200×1000 pallets: Dolly Pallet, 1200×800 Dolly or LL Trolley.

Capacity per trolley and per train

  • KLT dollies 250 kg (VII C 70 kg), 800×600 Dolly 500 kg, 1200×800 Dolly 300 kg, Dolly Pallet and LL Trolley 1000 kg.
  • In a convoy the total counts too: 1000 kg with VII B, 1600 kg with 800×600 and 1200×800, 4000 kg with Dolly Pallets, at 6 km/h.
  • Start from the heaviest load, container included.

Castors and floors

  • Polyamide: hard and free-rolling, for smooth industrial floors.
  • Elastic rubber: softer and quieter, kind to delicate floors.
  • ESD polyamide where electronic components are handled. 2 fixed castors hold the line, 4 swivel castors turn on the spot.

Convoy or tugger train

  • Convoy: trolleys coupled with the drawbar, uncoupled from the last one; with the Milkrun Drawbar you connect them to the towing vehicle.
  • Taxi Liner: 3 bays for 600×400 dollies, loading and unloading from both sides.
  • LiftLiner®: 1000 kg per bay, up to 8 trolleys, U-turn in 4.5 m with 3 LiftLiners.

Line-side ergonomics

  • Raised decks: Dolly Type VII C, Type I with raised deck, Raised Dolly Pallet at about 600 mm.
  • The LiftLiner lifts the trolley in under 3 s and tilts it towards the operator when unloading.
  • Open-fronted bins: take the part from the front, without moving the bin.

Tidy line side and FIFO

  • Floor-level FIFO lanes: the first trolley in is the first out, and material doesn’t age at the back of the row.
  • Monorail 40 or 55 mm depending on castor width; FIFO Station and Monorail Individual for non-standard widths.
  • Park Station: every trolley has its own place and doesn’t move while you load or pick.

Wheels and floors

2 fixed wheels keep the trajectory, 4 swivel wheels turn on the spot.

Polyamide

Hard and smooth-running, for smooth industrial floors. It is the standard wheel.

Elastic rubber

Softer and quieter, gentle on delicate floors.

ESD polyamide

Dissipates electrostatic charges where electronic components are handled: on Dolly Type I, II, VII B and 800×600.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dolly and when is it worth it?

A dolly is a wheeled base for KLT containers, boxes or pallets: you put the stack on the dolly and take it from the warehouse to the line without lifting it. It pays off when operators move containers and components by hand several times a day: less lifting, fewer trips, containers that arrive at the workstation ready to use. Empty dollies stack: 15 units in less than 2 metres.

Dolly Type I, II, VII B or VII C: which should I choose?

They all have a 600×400 deck (Type I, II and VII B also 600×500) and 100 mm castors. Type I has 2 swivel and 2 fixed castors and no drawbar: it runs straight and is pushed by hand. Type II has 4 swivel castors: it turns on the spot and is handy in tight spaces. Type VII B is like Type I but with a sliding drawbar and Easy Lock hitch, for coupling several dollies into a convoy. Type VII C adds a raised deck to the drawbar: containers reach the line at gripping height; it carries up to 70 kg, the others 250 kg.

What is a tugger train and what is a milk run?

A tugger train is an electric tractor that tows several trolleys or trailers along a fixed route. In a milk run the train makes a round at regular intervals, like a milkman: it delivers materials to the points of use, collects empty containers and kanban cards and returns to the warehouse. Compared with single forklift trips you reduce traffic, waiting and line-side stock.

Dolly convoy, Taxi Liner or LiftLiner: what’s the difference?

In a convoy, dollies and dolly pallets are coupled one behind the other with the drawbar and uncoupled in order, starting from the last; with the Milkrun Drawbar Assembly you connect them to the towing vehicle. The Taxi Liner is a 3-bay trailer for 600×400 dollies: take the dolly you need from either side, without uncoupling the others. The LiftLiner® lifts LL Trolleys, up to 1000 kg per bay and 8 trolleys per train, and unloads them from both sides, tilting them towards the operator: it is the solution for pallets and heavy loads without forklifts on the shop floor.

How many trolleys can I couple in a convoy?

It depends on the trolley: up to 7–8 Dolly VII B and 1000 kg; up to 5–6 Dolly 800×600 or 1200×800 with drawbar and 1600 kg; up to 6 Dolly Pallets and 4000 kg. The recommended maximum speed is 6 km/h, 4 km/h with VII C. The right number depends on the towing vehicle, bends and gradients: we check it with you on the route.

Polyamide, rubber or ESD castors: which should I choose?

Polyamide is the standard castor: hard and free-rolling, suitable for smooth industrial floors. Elastic rubber is softer and quieter and is kind to delicate floors. ESD polyamide dissipates electrostatic charges and is used where electronic components are handled: it is available on Dolly Type I, II, VII B and on the 800×600 Dolly. Dolly Pallet and Dolly Taxi have Ø 160 mm polyurethane castors with brake; LL Trolleys have Ø 200 mm polyamide castors.

How are dollies stored and shipped?

With the Lean Adaptor Pallet, the steel pallet for dollies: it carries 4 dollies of 600×400, or 2 dollies of 800×600, 1 dolly of 800×600 and 2 of 600×400, or one 1200×800 dolly, up to 1000 kg. You move it by forklift from the long and short side and stack two loaded Adaptors; on arrival the dollies roll off without lifting. To close the load there is the lid with retractable straps in a version for Dolly and Adaptor Pallet.

FIFO lane: FIFO Station, Monorail or Flatrail?

The FIFO Station is a yellow self-adhesive PVC profile: it adapts to almost any castor width and guides trolleys on one or both sides. Monorails are aluminium rails that guide the castors on one side only: the 40 for castors up to 40 mm wide, the 55 for up to 55 mm and for larger trolleys and heavier loads; with the connecting plates you build multi-lane stations without drilling the floor. The Monorail Individual has separate guide sides, for custom widths. The Flatrail is a 75 × 5 mm adhesive flat guide, with length on request.

Aluminium or plastic Park Station?

The aluminium one is the robust solution: high, low or mixed profiles, adhesive mounting or screw holes, and spacers for castors even over 180 mm. The plastic one is yellow, light, self-adhesive and easy to cut: it suits light trolleys, up to 150 kg, and workstations that need to be set up or changed quickly.

Can you help me choose and set up the milk run?

Yes. We start from your flows: what you move, in which containers, where and how often, on which routes and floors. We propose dollies, trolleys, castors and accessories, put the train together with you using the towing vehicles you have, and lay out FIFO lanes and trolley places at the line side. Then we deliver, commission and remain your point of contact for spare parts and support.

Want to know which carts your flow needs?

Tell us what you move, where and how often: we will propose dollies, train and line side.
