Aluminium strut profile 40x160L – tall, light cross member with 10 mm slot
The 40x160L is a tall, lightweight profile in the 40 series: four 10 mm slots on each long side and one on each short side. Mounted upright it has Ix = 466.7 cm⁴ at only 5.5 kg/m: you use it for long cross members, gantries and machine bases, with the same slot C10 accessories as the 40x40L and 40x80L profiles. You receive it as a full bar or cut to length in our workshop.
Why choose it
Stiff when upright
Ix = 466.7 cm⁴ and Wx = 58.3 cm³ with the 160 mm side vertical.
Ten slots
Four slots per long side and one per short side: room for brackets, guides and panels.
Dedicated bracket
Bracket 40x160 for slot C10: 9000 N, M8x25 screws at 25 Nm.
Bar or cut to length
6070 mm bar or pieces cut from 50 mm upwards.
Choose it if…
- You need a long, rigid but light cross member.
- You are building gantries or machine bases in the 40 series.
- You want four slots on the long side for brackets and guides.
- The load acts mainly in one direction.
Choose another solution if…
- The span is shorter and less stiffness is enough: Aluminium strut profile 40x120L →
- The load also comes from the side: Aluminium strut profile 80x160L →
- You need a square profile with a high-capacity slot: Aluminium strut profile 90x90 →

Connections for the 40x160L
For the most heavily loaded joints we'll tell you the number of brackets and nuts for each connection.
The LeanProducts service
From the bill of materials to ready-to-assemble parts, with a single point of contact:
Cutting to length
We cut the profiles in our workshop to the lengths on your parts list: full bar or cut to length.
Check of codes and quantities
We start from the parts list or a sketch: we check profiles, brackets, connectors, nuts and cover caps for every joint.
Ready-to-assemble kits
You receive cut profiles and accessories grouped by structure, with the component list.
Spare parts
When you modify or extend the structure we supply the same original components.
Send us the parts list or a photo of the structure: we reply with codes and quantities.

The 40x160L is stiffer upright (Ix = 466.7 cm⁴) and lighter (5.5 kg/m), but sideways it has only 37.2 cm⁴ and in torsion 25.8 cm⁴. The 80x120L has Iy = 192.8 cm⁴ and It = 119 cm⁴: choose it when the load comes from several directions.
Upright, with the 160 mm side vertical: that way it works with Ix = 466.7 cm⁴. Laid flat it drops to Iy = 37.2 cm⁴, so as a cross member loaded from above it must always be mounted on edge.
The 40x160 bracket for slot C10: it holds 9000 N, with M8x25 screws tightened to 25 Nm. Available as a designLINE set with screws and nuts or as the bracket alone, and you close it with the cover cap for the 40x160 bracket.
Two 40x80 cover caps side by side, in signal grey PP or black ESD.
The 40x120L weighs 4.2 kg/m and has Ix = 203.2 cm⁴; the 40x160L weighs 5.5 kg/m and reaches 466.7 cm⁴: more than twice the stiffness for little extra weight. Choose the 40x160L for longer spans or higher loads.
The static slot limit, with the largest thread, is 7000 N with the T-nut and 12000 N with the sliding block, as for the other L profiles with slot C10. Apply your own safety factors.
From the side it is much less rigid (Iy = 37.2 cm⁴) and in torsion it has It = 25.8 cm⁴. If the load comes from several directions, consider the 80x120L or 80x160L, which are rigid sideways too.
It is the width of the profile slot and determines which accessories you use. Slot C6 (6 mm) is for 20 series profiles, C8 (8 mm) for the 30 series, C10 (10 mm) for profiles from the 40 series upwards. Nuts, screws, brackets and cover caps are chosen by slot: each accessory's product page shows the right one.
Yes. You can order the full bar or the piece cut to the length you need: we do the cutting ourselves, in our workshop. Each profile's product page shows the maximum bar length and the minimum cut length.
Look at the moments of inertia Ix and Iy: the higher they are, the less the profile deflects under load. For the same section, “L” profiles are lightened and deflect a little more. For long spans or high loads move to a larger section or a tall profile (e.g. 45x90 instead of 45x45). If you send us drawing and loads, we will check the choice.
The T-nut is inserted from the front into the slot, even in an assembled structure, and positions itself when you tighten the screw: it is the standard choice for fixing accessories. The sliding block withstands higher forces, but normally has to be inserted from the profile end before closing the frame; spring versions stay where you put them.
The simplest way is the bracket, which joins two profiles at 90° with screws and nuts in the slot, without machining. For end, T, 45° or three-way connections there are dedicated connectors, some of which require profile machining as stated on their product page.
Yes, for several accessories (for example cover caps, hinges and nuts) there are conductive ESD versions, indicated in the name or variant. Tell us which EPA area you work in and we will confirm the components to use.
On each product page you will find the MGE catalogue pages to download as PDF, with dimensioned drawings and technical data; the Specifications tab shows the data for the variant you have chosen.
