Aluminium strut profile 40x40L – profile with slot 10, 40 series
The 40x40L is the basic profile of the 40 series: 10 mm slots on all four sides and a 40 mm modular dimension. It is more compact than the 45x45L and weighs 1.5 kg/m: use it for benches, workstations, guards, equipment frames and light trolleys. At the end the central bore can be threaded M12 for levelling feet and screws.
Why choose it
Compact
40 mm side with the 10 mm slot: C10 accessories in a reduced footprint.
Complete family
In the 40 series you will find versions with closed sides (1N, 2N), the radiused one (R) and the 40x80L and 40x120L profiles.
Central bore M12
Threaded at the end it takes levelling feet and screws: minimum length 60 mm on one end, 110 on both.
Bar or cut to size
6070 mm bar of usable length or pieces cut to your dimensions, from 50 mm upwards.
Choose it if…
- You build compact benches, workstations or guards with normal loads.
- You want 10 mm accessories in a 40 mm footprint.
- You want to combine 40 series profiles (40x80L, 40x120L, 80x80L) with the same connectors.
- You need a light profile that is easy to modify.
Choose another solution if…
- You need smooth sides, with only one open slot: on request
- You have more heavily loaded crossbars: the 40x80L has Ix 63.4 cm⁴: Aluminium strut profile 40x80L →
- You prefer the 45 series, with a little more rigidity: Aluminium strut profile 45x45L →

How to use it in the structure
Three practical tips for the 40x40L:
Stay within the series
In the 40 series slots and pitch are the same for all profiles: 40x40L, 40x80L and 40x120L use the same connectors.
Span and deflection
Over a 1000 mm span, supports at the ends and 500 N at the centre, the theoretical deflection is about 1.6 mm.
Closed sides where needed
The 1N and 2N versions leave one or two slots open: smooth sides where you fix nothing.
For long crossbars move to the 40x80L upright: Ix seven times higher.

The 40x40L weighs 1.5 kg/m and has Ix 9.1 cm⁴; the 45x45L weighs 1.6 kg/m and has 11.7 cm⁴. Both have a 10 mm slot, but brackets, cover caps and connectors are taken in the series size, 40x40 or 45x45: choose one series and use it throughout the structure.
An example: 1000 mm span, crossbar supported at the ends and 500 N at the centre. The theoretical deflection is about 1.6 mm (E = 70 000 N/mm², Ix = 9.1 cm⁴). If you need less deflection, the 40x80L upright drops to about 0.23 mm.
Have the central bore at the end threaded M12 and screw in an levelling foot with M12 stem. The profile threaded on one end is ordered from 60 mm in length, on both ends from 110 mm.
The bracket 40x40 for 90° joints, the cubic connector 40x40 for three-way joints and the T-connector 40x40. They are all for 10 mm slot in size 40.
The cover cap for profile 40x40 in polypropylene, grey or black ESD: it also closes the 40x40L 1N and 40x40L 2N.
It is the width of the profile slot and determines which accessories you use. Slot C6 (6 mm) is for 20 series profiles, C8 (8 mm) for the 30 series, C10 (10 mm) for profiles from the 40 series upwards. Nuts, screws, brackets and cover caps are chosen by slot: each accessory's product page shows the right one.
Yes. You can order the full bar or the piece cut to the length you need: we do the cutting ourselves, in our workshop. Each profile's product page shows the maximum bar length and the minimum cut length.
Look at the moments of inertia Ix and Iy: the higher they are, the less the profile deflects under load. For the same section, “L” profiles are lightened and deflect a little more. For long spans or high loads move to a larger section or a tall profile (e.g. 45x90 instead of 45x45). If you send us drawing and loads, we will check the choice.
The T-nut is inserted from the front into the slot, even in an assembled structure, and positions itself when you tighten the screw: it is the standard choice for fixing accessories. The sliding block withstands higher forces, but normally has to be inserted from the profile end before closing the frame; spring versions stay where you put them.
The simplest way is the bracket, which joins two profiles at 90° with screws and nuts in the slot, without machining. For end, T, 45° or three-way connections there are dedicated connectors, some of which require profile machining as stated on their product page.
Yes, for several accessories (for example cover caps, hinges and nuts) there are conductive ESD versions, indicated in the name or variant. Tell us which EPA area you work in and we will confirm the components to use.
On each product page you will find the MGE catalogue pages to download as PDF, with dimensioned drawings and technical data; the Specifications tab shows the data for the variant you have chosen.
